Transcript: Owning A Business VS. Working For A Corporation
DR. SALWAN:
Hello ladies and gentlemen have you ever wondered which is better, owning a business of your own or working for a big company? Today, we have two doctors who have done both and would like to share their experience. Dr. Mitul Amin and Kavita Salvi-Amin had two successful dental offices in Southern California, one in Rancho Cucamonga and one in Corona California. Dr. and Dr. Salvi-Amin sold both dental offices and moved to Texas. The question you may ask is “why?” When you get an opportunity that is too good to pass up, that is exactly what you may do.
You’re young, why did you sell your business already?
DR. MITUL AMIN:
For me, the dream was always to own multiple dental offices. However I slowly realized that what I really enjoyed about ownership was the management and leadership of the entire dental team. About 5 years into ownership, I was approached by an opportunity to be a district dental director where I would mentor approximately 15 doctors and 11 offices. Kavita also received a great work schedule to help make time for our family as well as work.
The great things about owning a dental office?
DR. KAVITA SALVI AMIN:
Being compatible as a leader and with your dental skills because the entire office looks to you for guidance.
DR. MITUL AMIN:
Being your own boss. Having your own schedule. Practicing dentistry within your own parameters.
The difficult things about owning a dental office?
DR. KAVITA SALVI AMIN:
Being a business owner, having to lead somebody can be difficult at times. Bringing that work home was difficult when I had to manage my kids as well. There’s multiple things that are going on at that time that it’s just too much for me to handle, so I needed to split my time accordingly. I still love being a dentist, but I didn’t like the practice part.
